A Photo a Day 2020 #274

September: a Roundup

September has marked the start of a new term and going back to a workplace where I come into contact with thousands of people: scary.

New measures have been put in place towards the end of September as cases of Coronavirus go up. The world seems a cruel and selfish place sometimes. It feels like many ignore rules in favour of doing what they want...

The gym remains a haven away from the stress of the day to day. I can run further than I could this time last year and I am grateful for the having a space to just re-group.

Who knows what the future holds. Things feel uncertain and sometimes bleak. But we keep on.

A Photo a Day 2020 #273

I shot this in pop colour mode and then added the miniature feature in editing. Sometimes I apply effects when shooting; other times I add effects after. This photo had so many lovely, vivid colour blocks and I wanted to emphasise the orange for this month's colour theme. I named it after a track on a 'The Imagined Village' albums.

Sometimes a mood is evoked by what you don't see. Perhaps the feeling of danger has been captured here, perhaps some kind of narrative?

Sometimes I wish I have my proper camera on me and I don't, so I just take a mediocre version of what could be on my phone. I vowed to post daily and so far I have done so-- every day of this miserable year. This project has made me a bit of a martyr at times; I'm dissatisfied with much of the output and a lot of days I wonder why it even matters. But then, photos can apparently speak a thousand words, so.

I shot this on a sepia mode and played up these tones. A lovely walk a few weeks ago before workload got heavy... Maybe I'll get another opportunity for an Autumn stroll this coming weekend.

A Photo a Day 2020 #261

Being in a pandemic means I'm not travelling far these days, but it's amazing how many different shots you can take in the same area. I took so many photos down one alleyway on Saturday. This is one of them.

Sometimes the best photos are unplanned and a chance moment. The lens wasn't the best quality zoom I own, but it looks ok edited.  This squirrel threw an acorn which narrowly missed my head after I took this.

The angle on this makes somewhat of an optical illusion and I really like how the creek and sky appear almost as a painting canvas (almost an echo of a surrealist work). Pure experiment and fluke, but a nice outcome. The contrast and colour was slightly amped in post-production.

Rare to say, but I like this photo. It was taken on a standard kit lens that comes with the Sony camera I have, so not the perfect crispness on the zoom, but pleasing enough. I like the swan in the background closing its eyes in contrast with the hostility/ inquisitiveness of the main guy in the foreground!

I didn't notice the Covid info inside the booth, but it is there on further inspection. The freestanding photo booth is a throwback to simpler times; a necessity perhaps for passport photo-taking, but not what it used to be for us 90s kids who used it for fun photos with friends.

This is the car from Stanley Kubrik's 'A Clockwork Orange' taken last year at the Design Museum, London at the Kubrik exhibition.

Yes, the theme of September is: 'Shades of Orange'!
